This was a great volume! I loved it a lot.
+ the relationship between Tsunayoshi and Emmonosuke, wherein I get both that push/pull of two people who are legitimately equals (in terms of physical beauty AND intelligence) but can't afford to get together AND the tragic flair. Because you know this will only end in tragedy. I just liked the way they reflect each other, especially since it happens in some unexpected ways.
+ the arc of Tsunayoshi's life, who really really is a brilliant woman who could be an amazing shogun and ruler... but always ends up being reduced to that pretty doll everyone admires ("You don't need to study so hard! You're so beautiful!!") and then later told that she doesn't need to rule at all but must concentrate on producing an heir, even while she's mourning the loss of her daughter. (And as a result, never goes through the stages of acceptance because she's never given proper time to grieve.) And how it makes her cruel and lost and despondent.
+/- 47 ronin! I liked that they were mentioned but eh, this just reminds me of how I wish people would do more with it in fiction. It seems like it's hardly ever portrayed.
+++++ Yoshimune! Yoshimune as a child and a sassy, clever, fierce one at that! It's awesome to see the seeds of the woman who'd become the most beloved shogun here. And I loved how some of her quirks in adulthood were explained here -- she doesn't like beautiful men at all! It's why she released all the beautiful men once she became shogun and why she became infamous for seducing the groundskeepers, laborers, and other "inappropriate" choices.
