Read full description of the books:
let's begin, class.
settle down, kids—settle down. it’s only video day.
this is how america thinks of isaac newton:
fig. 1: moderately old n busted isaac newton.
he's dead now, but when he was alive he built the first reflecting telescope, formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation, and invented calculus when he was a teenager because he was bored on campus during summer break this one time.
but most people in this country only remember him for that bit of bother with the apple, bcuz 'murrika.
he was also gay as fuck, and at one point looked like this:
fig. 2: mature yet foxy isaac newton with dreamy eyes and chinbutt, aged 46.
which, c'mon, look at that guy! i'd totally hit that.
i love this other badass portrait of him where he looks like he threw on a robe right after sticking his dick inside some dude and then posed for a painting:
fig. 3: mature yet foxy isaac newton with dreamy eyes and chinbutt after sticking his dick inside some dude, aged 46.
actually, it looks more like he had his dick inside some dude the entire time.
but not really—or, in fact, at all: other geniuses generally agree he died a virgin. which—you know?
what a waste.
he was also occasionally regarded as kind of a douchebag.
as in, distant and dickish and not at all the kind of person you wanted to invite to parties—not that he'd go if you did.
he was president of the royal society, an institution which collected all the brightest natural philosophers in england and squirrelled them away in various dungeon laboratories to dissect live dogs, set things on fire, and fool around with dead bodies in an effort to figure out how everything in the natural universe worked.
he made many enemies and many frenemies and generally spent all his time not speaking out loud in the cafeteria or sequestered in a garret being a fervently devout yet [definitively] unorthodox christian, working on alchemy and biblical chronology until the day he died—which is a state of affairs that can be loosely translated into modern internetese as 'way smart, but also completely cray-cray.'
he may also have been autistic.
this is carl sagan:
fig. 4: carl sagan's portrait on the SETI website [carl be lookin for aliens, yo]
he's dead, too—but unlike newton, he was actually pretty popular and welcome at most parties, not least because he said this:
fig. 5: "the illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world." [carl be crunchy as fuck, yo]
which was immediately interpreted by all and sundry to mean:
fig. 6: let us fellowship this bowl. [carl be on some good shit, yo]
also bcuz, 'murrika, but which is more or less fine, given that it isn't that far from what he meant anyway.
he was the face of science in this country for nearly four decades.
he brought a better understanding of our world into millions of homes, in through the television, with his astonishing cosmos series, which was later remade by none other than family guy's seth macfarlane, and hosted by this guy:
fig. 7: neil degrasse-tyson embarrassing jon stewart on television. on his own program. like a badass.
who, together, have spent their lives doing for us what rick, in this story, does for isaac.
they teach us to love and understand who we are, and how we fit, and where we're going.
which is why it's one of the best love letters to either man i've ever read.
and i swear 'rick' must be short for richard dawkins, but i'm too chicken to ask the author directly.
it may be a stretch, but dawkins did coin the term 'meme.'
*sits back and waits for your mind to explode*
someone get the lights, please.
as for newton, his eccentricities put him squarely on the autism spectrum on the aspergery side. if nobody showed up to one of his lectures, he'd simply give his lecture to the empty room.
some think he went nuts as a result of mercury poisoning, trying to turn lead into gold and whatnot.
either way, he mos def died a badass motherfucker, in whose epigraph english poet alexander pope famously honored thusly:
nature and nature's laws lay hid in night;
god said 'let newton be' and all was light.
fig. 8: sir isaac newton not giving a fuck about asperger's syndrome, aged 46
